Directions to Il Gelso: Le Terrazze: and La Torricella
NOTE: Il Gelso (the owmers Home) and LeTerrazze and their gardens are both within the Grounde of Tenuta Il Gelso comprising about 18 acres, and are entered from the same entrance Gates after which the driveway divides --RIGHT to Il Gelso --LEFT FORK for Le Terrazze - (formerly an original 14th c- farmhouse and named Gelso 2 after restoration)—If you see the sign for La Torricella on the way ignore it and wait till you have collected the keys and the map which you will need
FROM THE AIRPORTS AT ROME. From Fiumicino take the direction for Roma until you reach the GRA (equivalent to the M25 around London) - and go clockwise – i.e. pass the sign for Napoli and take the sign immediately after this for Firenze – continue until exit 10 which is for the A1 north to Firenze. From Ciampino airport you will join the GRA at exit 23 and turn right going anti-clockwise until you reach the exit 10 for Firenze- You will come to the toll gates after about 8 kms take one of the entry points for cash payment. . Take the Exit at ORTE which is only about 20-25 minutes from Roma Nord do not take the exit at Orvieto which looks closer to TODI but is a much slower road . c At Orte you will need to pay about 5 € at the cash point .You then take the E45 towards Terni --After the third tunnel which is very long going downhill—take the road sign-posted Perugia about 5 kms after the tunnel- Todi is 32 kms going North from this turning.—You then take the exit sign for TODI-SAN DAMIANO.- which takes you up a steep hill to the Town.
FROM THE NORTH. You may be touring or have taken the airport to Pisa or Milano. Find the Ai motorway on your map coming down towards Roma and take the exit at Val di Ciana for Perugia -Pay the toll fee at the exit and continue towards Perugia you will pass through several tunnels which by-pass the city on the South side. After the last tunnel, going down-hill take the exit for Roma which takes you on to the E45 going South.. After 34 kms you will see the exit sign TODI—ORVIETO--- Do not take this continue to the next exit for TODI (another 2 kms) and take the exit Todi San Damiano. The directions in the next paragraph are simpler to follow and the same as for arrivals from Rome airports.
TO THE VILLAS. Following the sign for Todi you will go up quite a steep hill, which bends right at the top—Join the main road and go right for about 100 metres downhill – then turn left up-hill –the road winds past a large church, then joins the road into the town where the shops start, Then-turn right up hill for 3 or 400 metres and you come to the city wall and a big arched entrance with traffic light above. Turn left going clockwise around the town, pass a chemist then 2 car parks with open views towards the hills beyond. You will see a journalist after the 2nd car park –After this turn left down a steep hill fallowing the sign for . -- PALAZZETO DELLO SPORT, at the bottom of the hill turn right – cross over a small bridge and you will come to the little hamlet of PONTE NAIA which has a small shop and Bar. Proceed past the sports ground and take the turning to your right about 300 metres after the village following the sign for TORRE GENTILE—After some 2 kms you may notice a sign for La Torricella on your left.. If you are staying there ignore this sign as you could miss the road without the directions after key collection. –Continuing along this valley you will come to a junction with many signs uphill to Fiori Izzalini etc., only one for TORRE GENTILE take this going straight on.- then cross a small bridge go up hill and after a bend in the road just before the village you will see the sign TENUTA IL GELSO on a stone (lit up at night). There will be an envelope on the wrought iron Entrance gate with your name on it. Take this and you will find the keys and Zappa for the gates are in the envelope. If you are staying at La Torricella you will find a map and instructions plus keys in the envelope. And you will have to back-track about 2 kms.
